Choosing the wrong bed sheet and having an uncleaned bedsheet will impact your body, health and overall wellbeing. The simple reason is bedsheets are like metaphorical fishing nets. It catches human cells, body oils, dirt from the air, moisture, sweat and even saliva (if you drool). As a result, you can have itchy and dry skin, infection, skin irritation, that can trigger allergies and dermatitis. Hence it is necessary to wash the bed sheets regularly.

Why is it necessary to wash your bedsheet? 

Here are some figures about bedsheets and how it impacts our health:

  • 26 gallons of sweat is secreted by a human in a bed every year.
  • A human sheds 1.5 gram of dead skin every day  of which 15 million skin cells are shed in the night and on the bedsheet, which will be a meal to million dust mites.
  • Not washing the bedsheets and the pillowcases becomes a breeding ground for different types of fungus; According to a study it typically harbors 16 species with millions of fungal spores.
  • A study revealed an unwashed bed sheet and pillowcases have 39 times more bacteria  compared to the bowls of a pet-food and a thousand times more than a home toilet seat.

How often should you change the bedsheet?

It is recommended that bedsheets should be changed and washed every week, however according to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2012 poll,91 percent of the respondents stated they change their bedsheets every fortnight. However, according to experts, there are cases where bedsheets are to be changed and washed more frequently than once every week if the person suffers from allergies, excessive sweating, infection or lesion or have habits like sleeping naked, or eats or have pets on the bed.

How to wash bed sheets for long-lasting usage? 

While washing them regularly is vital, ensuring that they have a long-lasting usage is essential too. Here are some tips to ensure that your bedsheets will last long when you follow these:

Note: Read the label on the bedsheet to ensure whether there are any specific cleaning suggestions, if there is any, follow that, or else you can follow the tips given below. 

  • Wash the sheets on a gentle cycle: Avoid washing your bed sheets on heavy-duty setting on the washing machine, unless they are filthy. Try and wash them on the regular or normal cycle.
  • Washer Overload: Adding many items on a single cycle will cause the sheets’ strangling, resulting in wear and tear. The temptation to wash the entire load will also result in the bedding not getting appropriately washed.
  • No to bed sheets drying with towels: Despite being linen cabinet mates, they do not go well together in the dryer. Towels being heavier and thicker require longer drying time. Drying the sheets with towels will result in damaging and shrinking the threads of the bedsheets from overheating. So we recommend washing the sheets with luke-warm water and dry them on low heat.

We also recommend ironing the sheets after washing to increase its longevity.

Stains on bedsheets are usual and requires being spotless in less time. Follow the below-mentioned tips to remove stains:

  • Try taking the action as soon as you notice the spot with cold water (As hot water will make the stain sit instead of going away).
  • If the stain has dried, soak your bedsheet for six to eight hours.
  • To eliminate odors from the bedsheet make use of vinegar and soak the bedsheet in it for half an hour and wash it with cold water.
  • For makeup, body products or tanning lotions stains prepare your washing machine with a good amount of detergent and add 3 squirts of washing liquid used for dishes and ¼ cup of borax.
  • To whiten bedsheets use oxygen-based bleach. Make sure any type of oxygen should not be used on woolen blankets or silk sheets.


With the washing of your bedding, a little diligence can go a long way in facilitating the sheets’ longevity. It’s true that at times can be a hassle to change the sheets and wash them every week, but it is worth the effort to ensure the well-being of your health and the fact that you can sleep in comfort and breathe freely without the worry of getting any infection.
